The 2011 Bike Run

Saturday 10 September

The Karen Teale Bike Run

This annual event took place on Saturday 10th September 2011.

Despite the terrible weather, 163 brave participants took part.

The annual Karen Teale bike run took place amid some very ‘mixed’ weather on Saturday. Despite the overhead conditions, 163 brave participants from as far afield as Dunbar and Glasgow together with many from Alford and surrounds  set out from the Grampian Transport Museum on a choice of 27 mile or 13 mile runs – and everyone completed the courses.

The first rider back at the Finish was Struan Pryde who completed the 13 mile run and only a short time later, Robert Brookes crossed the finish line for the 27 mile route.

Later in the day the youngest riders were given the opportunity to cycle around the track at the Grampian Transport Museum in their own event.

Participants on the day ranged in age from 3 to those already drawing a pension.  “It was great to see all age ranges represented and such a strong sense of community spirit. The main aim of the event is to raise money for charity and already, we’ve received the first of the sponsorship funds” said event committee member, Stuart Todd. “A big thank you to the riders and all who helped in the preparation and on the day”

Macmillan Cancer Support is this year’s main beneficiary with Alford Car Transport Service, the local charity, which will also receive financial assistance. A smaller proportion of the proceeds will go to Rotary Foundation.

Considering the rain, an appropriate display of a Shelter Box tent was set up in the museum grounds by members of Alford and District Rotary Club. The club has sent these Shelter boxes to disaster areas throughout the world

All sponsor forms and monies should be forwarded to Stuart Todd, Nethermuir Cottage, Dunecht, AB32 7DT.

2011 Beneficiaries

Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer. We provide practical, medical and financial support and push for better cancer care. Cancer affects us all. We can all help. We are Macmillan.

Alford Car Transport Service (ACTS)
The aim of the charity is to enable people to attend health and similar related appointments, where public or family transport is unavailable or inappropriate. The drivers are all volunteers who give their time freely to help those in need, especially in our rural area where transport is non-existent or unsuitable.

Rotary Foundation

Rotary's own charity - the mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.
